    Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

    June 16, 2010 by

Cupcakes, muffins, lamingtons, cookies, slices you name it, we had it at our school’s Biggest Morning tea. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a nationwide event held each year and we held our own event on Wednesday 26 May.

This year our school was HUGELY successful and every single student  in Year 6 managed to bring in a sweet treat to sell. This year we managed to make $1171.60 to raise funds for the Cancer Council.  What a wonderful result!!!

1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Last year Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raised almost $5 million in New South Wales! One dollar at a time makes a difference by helping to fund Cancer Council’s research, prevention, education and support services.

Not only that, but our school students were able to enjoy the baking talents of Year 6!!!

    MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY WALK-A-THON

    June 16, 2010 by

In our school, we have two boys who have Muscular Dystrophy, one is in our grade.  In Term 3, our school is going to do a Walk-a-thon to support the dad of one of the boy’s, who is riding his bike to Brisbane.  We all have to wear the colour red and do some laps of an oval.  Last Thursday, the boys with Muscular Dystrophy did a speech in assembly on their condition and how hard it is for them and how they can still have as much fun as everyone else.  We are really looking forward to raising money for them by doing the Walk-a-thon!

We will post some pictures up next term and we will tell you how it went!

    WELCOME TO YEAR 6 2010!

    June 2, 2010 by

We’re back! This is a brand new year and 6HS are looking forward to showcasing our work to the WORLD. This is an exciting year and we will keep you posted on everything we are doing.

It has taken us a while to get going this year, but finally we have started blogging! What with all the building going on in our school and relocated classes, regular acces to a computer has been difficult.  A couple of weeks ago, our class was relocated to the library which happens to also house 30 computers! Although other classes do use the computers, we now have much more regular access which we love.

Some of the things we will be blogging about shortly will be:

    • what we have been up to in Term 1
    • Game Design with Kodu, a visual programming language made specifically for creating games. Our class has been playing with Kodu and are currently designing arcade games
    • our unit on sustainability that will cover 2 terms. Next term we will be using nova data loggers and iphones as a part of this unit. We can’t wait.
    • we will showcase some of the digital book reports that our class are currently working on and will publish using some of the following: prezi, xtranormal, slide, slideshare, kizoa, storybird and storyjumper.

    Stay tuned!

    Student Design using LAMS

    November 17, 2009 by

    By Briana and Elly

During term 3 our class was part of a project using a a software called LAMS which stands for Learning Activity Management System. LAMS helps people organise information into a sequence. Two teachers from Macquarie University (Concetta Gotlieb and Mitchell Squires) came to our school and explained that we would be using LAMS to author our own sequences. This was something teachers usually do but this time we would be the teachers and design learning sequences for our class mates.

In pairs, we designed sequences about micro-organisms. Once we all finished our sequences, we went into LAMS as learners and went through our class’s sequences.

We found that authoring our own sequences was a lot harder than we first thought it would be. We had to really think about lots of things like:

    • how we liked to learn and then try to design learning activities that were interesting and fun
    • what tools in LAMS were the best ones to use to achieve the purpose we wanted.
    • how would we know if learners in our sequence were actually learning new content
    • what was the best way to sequence our activities.

LAMS is a great learning tool that is creative and very fun to use. If I asked everyone whether they liked LAMS or not they would all say they didn’t like it, they loved it.

Four students, Elly, Briana, Ben and Ogi and our teacher went to Maquarie University to participate in a LAMS workshop with students from other schools.  In teams, we had to design a learning sequence which would allow the learners to invent a new technology. We did not have much time to design the sequence but we did work well as a team. It was good to be learners in the other team’s sequences.

Since this project finished, we have completed other LAMS sequences. We enjoy making sequences with Lams and letting friends try them out. We are currently working in teams designing learning sequences on Antarctica. Some of us have greated Kahootz animations on Antarctcia and uploaded them to You tube. Then we have inserted this into LAMS. We definitely enjoy creating our learning content rather that just reading it in a book or on a web site.

    Kahootz Showcase

    November 17, 2009 by

    By Dana and Patrick

    Kahootz

Last term our class was involved in the game-based learning project. We had the opportunity to use the Kahootz software to create an educational game. Kahootz is a program that enables you to create your own 3D games, movies, slideshows and much more.

On the 17th September in Term 2, we were invited to Maquarie University to present a speech on game-based learning. Dean Groom from Macquarie University was showing a presentation that was about gamebased learning. Dean then logged the virtual world called Second Life. He met an avatar called Maggie (Peggy Sheehey from New York) who talked online about game-based learning in her school using World of Warcraft. After she had finished her presentation, Dean was then presented with a box of chocolates (which he then gave to Dana and me (Patrick to share). We thought that was pretty great.  We were then escorted to another room where we could practise our presentations for a while.

Later, we ate recess with the adults and we were introduced to two Year 6 students from Epping Public School who were also presenting a speech and a Kahootz game.

I (Patrick) presented my speech first. I was really nervous and then Dana presented. We talked about what we learnt and what we thought about game based learning. My game was based on a book called Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda. Dana’s was about micro-organisms which we learnt about in Term 2. We were asked lots of questions by the teachers who listened to us. They really enjoyed our presentations. We ended up presenting twice to different teachers.

After that, we went outside and there was about a hundred sandwiches on plates. We ate some sandwhiches and then we shared the chocolates Dean Groom gave us with the Epping PS students. (They were  Ferrero Rochair’s covered in coconut. Mmmm.)

Finally, we went home with our Principal Mr Jones back to school, however unluckily, there was still ten minutes left of school when we arrived.

We found the whole experience really enjoyable.

    Game Design using Kahootz

    October 26, 2009 by

I have learned many things whilst making a game with Kahootz. I learned such things like learning to use computers better but most of all I have learned what people want in a game and what people enjoy.

Also, I have learned how to solve problems. Sometimes one aspect of the game wouldn’t operate and we had to think of other idea’s that would be just as good.

Game Design using Kahootz provided a great experience for myself and everyone in our class as we have leaned many things but it was also great fun!
